The leaves have fallen, the sun disappears by 4:30 p.m., and the temperatures have dropped. ‘Its UGG season, everyone’s favorite fashion statement.
There are different origins and claims of where UGGs came from, the earliest one dating back to 1920. although the official UGG website says the story began in 1978. In 1978, Australian surfer Brian Smith designed a sheepskin boot. This boot soon became a symbol of SoCal beach culture.
Since then, UGGs have continued to gain popularity. In 2003, celebrity Oprah Winfrey wore the boots in the second edition of her segment “Oprah’s Favorite Things,” when she purchased over 350 boots for the audience and staff. This caused a huge flow of sales and buzz among celebrities.
Celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian wore UGGs back in the early 2000s. UGGs were typically worn with Juicy Couture and denim. Although trending mostly in the early 2000s, the famous boot has resurfaced in popularity with Gen-Z, along with other “Millennial” trends. Nowadays, they’re usually worn with leggings or sweatpants.
Sophomore Zahaira at FHHS explains her go-to outfit to pair with UGGs. “My go-to outfit has to be baggy jeans with a cute tank top and a small sweater.”
UGGs will continue to thrive for generations to come, as long as the comfort and aesthetic are present.
But the UGGs complete the look. “I love wearing UGGS because they’re so convenient, comfy and super cute. They can go with any outfit, summer or winter, just depends on how you style them.”
