Earth is in Crisis: Climate Change Hits Home in NYC

Intro

Global warming has effects on cities all over the world, even New York City, a massively populated and significantly important area. This beautiful city is vulnerable to climate change.

Flooding

Flooding is caused by the melting of polar ice caps due to higher global temperatures that are causing ocean and sea levels to rise at an alarming rate. If this continues, we are at risk of flooding in Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island, especially. NYC Mayor’s office of Climate & Environment Justice says,  “Since 1900, sea levels in New York City have risen by about 12 inches and are projected to increase as much as 5.4 feet by 2100, leading to increased frequency and intensity of coastal flooding.”

Temperature/Weather

Global warming is also contributing to an increase in warm weather in New York City. In 2022, NYC recorded one of its hottest summers and data shows that this will become more common than we think, risking the vulnerable population. Ms Miller, a science teacher at FHHS says, “Global warming is a term that is often used to describe global climate change, so climate change indicates that there’s actually not going to be warmth everywhere. It’s a misconception that global warming is the only way that climate will change. Some research shows it will actually get colder.”

Let’s Do Something

  • How can high school students raise awareness?
  • Use social media by sharing information and resources
  • Participate in reading articles and hashtags about climate change
  • Fundraise and participate in renewable energy projects.
  • Practice sustainable food practices by picking local food options to reduce food waste and even compost.

Did you know? You can compost at a farmers market or even around your neighborhood. New York City is responding to climate change risks through policies and climate adaptations. Advocating for what is right is not always easy. But even one individual can make a difference, even in our own school building.
